The Memory Lane theme went very well, with many people bringing in lots of memorabilia to check out and talk and laugh about. We also had over 30 signs posted that related to running, the past (long or not so long past), of local and general interest. The winning entry was from Brenda Gill, who wrote: "I haven't been running long enough to have a blurb". Her prize was an autographed copy of 30 Phone Booths to Boston by Don Kardong.
The other "blurbs" were Don Kardong finished 4th in the '76 Montreal Olympic Marathon (the winner, East German Waldemar Cierpinski, used performance-enhancing drugs) Who in his or her mind would actually PAY to run! Running down Ash Street in Bloomsday - you were given ice. A technical shirt was one you could technically still wear around the house after it was too faded and stretched to be seen in public. A "Scenic Race" used to refer to the landscape. Now it refers to the view of runners wearing spandex tights, tiny shorts, sports bras and cute skirts. Longjohns and pantyhose ruled winter runs before spandex came along. Females were deemed too fragile to run farther than a mile. Carbo load was what you dumped in thebushes after you ate too much the night before your long run. Spring Tonic was not a drink, but a 5-mile race where proceeds went to the local Red Cross. To Sandpoint they went. They looked at their foes. In their eyes was glint. BRRC took what they chose. Sandpoint's Half Marathon was a challenge to meet, but the women from Spokane could not be beat! We may be injured, we may fall on our face, but BRRC women will finish the race! The old gray mares they aint what they used to be... they're BETTER! Olympic Marathon and Boston Marathon were for men only. Heart Runs were monthly non-competetive timed runs. The $2 entry fee was donated to the Heart Association. Do you remember the various locations where the runs were held? Power drinks were watered-down coke. Long runs were fueled with Power Bananas instead of power bars or gels. Men actually believed they were a) tougher, b) faster, c).......(fill in the blank) than women runners. BAR-S Stampede was not a rodeo, but a 10-K race where post-race refreshments consisted of hotdogs. Bare Buns were smething you ate after your run (if you didn't like the hot dogs at the Bar-S Stampede). Colbert Autumn Classic Half Marathon gave pumpkins to the last 2 in each age group. Gerry Lindgren singlehandedly beat the Russians. The difference between a runner and a jogger is an entry blank ...George Sheehan Never underestimate the power of a t-shirt ...Fred Lebow Marathon runners do not suffer insanity....they savor every mile of it. Will someone give Bob Massie tips on how to get a gallon of apple cider home on his bike? It's a Colbert Half Marathon catastrophe for First Place. The parade at Coolin with a BRRC float. The chartered bus trips to Odessa Deutsches Fest, Over the Dam and Seattle Marathon. Gunhild Hotmail: Powerful Free email with security by Microsoft. Get it now. = |
