Spokane Marathon Course

The first miles take the runners out of downtown Spokane through the historic Browne’s Addition. After that they will run a few miles along the course of the famous Lilac Bloomsday run. Next, they will run along the Centennial Trail, high above the Spokane River, eye level with the many birds that make the tall trees their homes. The course then meanders through the beautiful campuses of Spokane Falls Community College and Fort Wright Mukogawa. Then it is back out onto the Centennial Trail to again follow the Spokane River to the Seven-Mile Bridge. At this point (just past the 14-mile mark), the runners begin their trek back towards downtown Spokane on a quiet, paved road on the opposite side of the river. The course has several rolling hills along the way, and the runner meets the most infamous one, Doomsday Hill, just before the 22-mile mark. The runners then turn into the West Central neighborhood where they run along Summit Blvd. and through the future home of Kendall Yards, again running high above the Spokane River. In the final mile, there is a small climb up Lincoln Street (which might not feel so small in the 26th mile), and then it is a flat stretch for about a quarter of a mile when the runners turn right into Riverfront Park and follow the trail south across two bridges (the second one is the Blue Bridge). In the middle of the Blue Bridge is the finish.

Course closes at 1:00 pm. Individuals who do not feel that they can complete the Marathon in five hours should register for the Half Marathon. As always over 26.2 miles, there may be construction or other issues that will force us to make changes to the course. If this happens we will announce it on this website.

Race Code of Conduct
  • Head Phones - The use of personal music devices is strongly discouraged at this race. The courses are not closed, so for the safety of all participants in these races we encourage a headphone-free environment during the running of the events.
  • The Spokane marathon and half marathon travel through much of the Spokane area, quite a bit of it through neighborhoods. As you are in your final preparations for your race, please consider reminding your friends and family who are going to travel around the course to cheer for you of a few considerations for the people living in those neighborhoods and the other runners in the race:
  • Be considerate of all runners—don’t drive along with the runners exposing them to your exhaust. Please park well off the road and cheer from the sidelines.
  • When you park in a neighborhood, please park where you won’t intrude on the neighbors. For example- Don’t park in driveways, don’t park in their flower beds, and if they come out to ask you to do something, don’t swear at them and call them names (Yes! This has all happened!)
  • Please don’t tell the neighbors that they can’t drive on the streets during the race. The roads are open, and we must share the road with the cars. Otherwise our permits won’t be renewed.
  • Treat their neighborhood as you would want yours treated if this were happening in your area.
Illegal Aid
  • One rule that many people aren’t aware of is the rule of illegal aid. This is true in all races where they give awards. Runners need to use the aid stations only for their aid (or carry what they need with them). If you are getting water, gel, or any other aid from someone other than aid station workers, you are actually getting illegal aid. You are getting help that others in the race aren’t able to get. Now, if you are just trying to finish, chances are people won’t notice that your spouse is meeting you every half mile and giving you the secret potion that you need. However, if you are vying for an age-group award, it may become an issue. Technically, according to USATF and RRCA rules (which are the rules we abide by), this is grounds for disqualification. The marathon committee’s hope is that everyone on the course will act with integrity and finish the race within these rules. We have had to deal with this issue once, and would rather not have to do so again.
Average Weather Conditions

Plan for cool, crisp temperatures at the start line - around 36 Degrees. Please check the race day weather forecast when you get into town and plan to dress accordingly.

  • High average for October 59 Degrees
  • Low average for October 36 Degrees
